what is SEO?:

“Search engine optimization (SEO) just means your site is as accessible as possible to the search engines to improve the chances that they will serve it up when your potential customers type in specific search terms. The more easily search engines find your site, the higher up it appears on their results pages.”

On the importance of your website structure:

“Structure your site properly, code it cleanly, and use necessary keywords. Sites that have the proper architecture in place, and are not slapped together, have a better chance of getting picked up by the major search engines.”

On selecting the right keywords to optimize for:

“Try to think from a user’s perspective. You may sell hats, but your customers may call them caps, lids, or fedoras. If you’re not sure, ask your clients how they got to your site. The most effective page titles are about 75 characters long and include the most important keywords at the beginning. On each page, keywords and phrases should represent 2% to 3% of the total content. If a search engine’s algorithms interpret your site as a keyword hog, it will pass it by.”

On getting links for your site:

“You’ll want to link your site to other sites, which will both increase traffic overall to your site and boost your search engine rankings, since the search engines pick up on the number of times people link to and from your site and rank you higher accordingly. So do things like listing your site with online business directories, even if you think no one will find you through them. Those links may not produce any direct leads, but they could bump you up in the search engine rankings, especially if they are popular or highly visited sources.”

On submitting your site to search engines:

“Research shows that older audiences still like AOL and professional audiences tend to like MSN and Google, while younger audiences often like Yahoo. Only about one-third of users use one search engine consistently. Knowing your audience will help you decide which search engines to optimize for. Go to their home pages and search “how do I submit my site?” to get easy instructions.”

On Flash versus text websites:

“Use plenty of text on your site, even in your drop-down menus, your headers, and your footers on each page. Text is what the search engine crawlers are looking for. Text within Flash-based components won’t help, however. This text is not accessible to the search engine site crawlers, and will not get picked up. Flash looks great, but it won’t help boost your search rankings.”

On the importance of SEO:

“Consumers trust user-generated search engine rankings more than paid advertisement rankings by a wide margin, as much as 70%. And optimizing your site gives you a huge competitive advantage. Even now, only 25% of the Fortune 100 businesses have completely optimized their sites in this way. If you act now, you’ll have an edge over competitors who haven’t optimized their sites.”

How to get ranked quickly in GOOGLE

If you have a website and are trying to drive traffic to it, getting ranked in Google will likely be the most cost efficient and effective way to promote it. Google often ’sandboxes’ new websites which means that they hold your domain in purgatory to see if you will post quality content before allowing you into their index.

I often get emails from webmasters asking what they can do to get indexed so I thought I would put together my top three suggestions for quickly getting ranked in Google. Using these methods you can rapidly rise out of Google purgatory and into their index, speeding past a lot of your competitors.

1) Get a quality link. It is no secret that Google’s ranking system works on links. The more quality links that you build, the faster you will get indexed. It really is a matter of quality over quantity when you have been sandboxed. All the links in the world from Page Rank 1 and 2 websites won’t get you listed. Focus on trying to land a Page Rank 5 or higher page to link to you. Also look for ones without many external links so you can get more link juice to your site. Most new website owners put all their energy into getting as many links as they can from directories, link exchange programs, and forums. Use that time wisely and invest it into trying to land a quality link from a high Page Rank page. It will go a lot further to getting your site in the main Google index where it belongs.

2) Start a blog. Search engines generally treat blogs differently than other websites. Because blogs change so frequently, the search engines need to be more proactive about indexing them. If a search engine waited six months before listing one of your blog posts chances are users would not find that search engine very useful and would turn somewhere else. You can use the free tools that Feedburner provides to get your blog promoted to the various blog search engines (Google Blog search included). Please note though that if you don’t post to your blog you won’t gain the benefits. Try to write once a day to have fresh content and show the search engines that you belong in their index.

3) Create a sitemap. I’ve talked at length in this blog about sitemaps and how to create them so I won’t go into too much detail here but they can be a valuable tool to help you get in the index. Imagine how many new websites are created every day which are all trying to get ranked. How is Google supposed to keep up with the barrage of new sites? If you are a brand new website you can easily be passed over and get lost in the shuffle. The trick to show Google you exist is to create a sitemap. A sitemap is a listing of all the pages you have on your site and Google provides you with a way through its Webmaster Central to tell them you exist. Another simpler technique is to just submit your site through Google’s Add your URL to Google form. Google provides you with the tools to let them know you exist - why make it hard on them?

Getting indexed is always the biggest challenge for a new website owner. The faster you can implement the above three suggestions, the more likely you will gain a rapid entry into Google’s search results.

What Is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization is working on the on-site and off-site factors that help you rank organically in the various search engines. Using Google as an example, it helps you rank on the left side of the page whereas Pay-Per-Click helps you rank on the right side of the page.

Pros of Search Engine Optimization

  • Drive More Traffic - More people pay attention to the organic results versus the sponsored results. Ranking at the top of the first page for a search term organically will drive much more traffic than paying to be number one in the sponsored links section.
  • Ongoing Cost Minimal - The biggest expense comes at the start with SEO. You have to identify the right keywords, build the content, develop linking partnerships, and submit your site to the search engines. There will always be additional work to create more links and content but the bulk of the cost is at the start and not ongoing like Pay-Per-Click.
  • Cheaper In The Long Run - After you do the work to get to number one, you do not have to pay for each click that goes to your website. The almost fixed startup costs can be spread out over all of your organic hits and will usually give a much greater ROI than Pay-Per-Click.
  • Click Fraud Not An Issue - If an unqualified lead clicks through to your website and leaves you do not have to pay for it. Similarly, if someone clicks on your website by accident or your competitors click through while doing research on you, your marketing budget does not get pinched like it would under a Pay-Per-Click campaign.

Cons of Search Engine Optimization

  • Startup Costs Significant - This is the biggest con of SEO. It can be very expensive to set up at the start, especially if you do not know what you are doing and have to bring in a professional. Expect to pay dearly for the service. If the price is cheap then you likely are not dealing with a true SEO expert. Make sure to check references and examples of successful projects.
  • Longer Term Traffic - While PPC can bring you traffic right away, SEO requires a longer term approach. It could take three months before Google even indexes your content pages. It will take even longer to build your links and establish a credible PageRank. Are you willing to wait it out?
  • Negative Impact On Web Design - SEO often requires that you change the architecture and layout of your web page. You will need to add more content and improve the keyword frequency of the important words you want to be ranked for. Having a website with a flashy graphical interface may look really cool but it will not help drive traffic to your site through the search engines.

So which is better - PPC or SEO? The answer is: it depends. Review the pros and cons of each to better understand your own situation. Many entrepreneurs often use both campaigns simultaneously and generate results from PPC and SEO.

No matter how you look at it, if you offer a service, you are trading your time for money. You have to be attentive to your customers and if you stop working, you stop getting paid. A great way around this is to videocast your service and charge a subscription fee. A recent example to look at is Salsa Boot Camp. Salsa Boot Camp is a website that was created by San Francisco salsa instructor Evan Margolin. Instead of running many classes which require his physical presence, Margolin records his salsa moves and puts them online. He sells monthly subscriptions and, 4 months after its launch, Margolin has increased his subscription fee from $9 to $37 per month and is making over $20,000 per month. By turning your service into a product you can pre-record your expertise into different segments and sell subscriptions online so you can make money while you sleep.

Create great content - and lots of it

The final suggestion I gave him was to generate a lot of great content and sell advertising space. While some bloggers are making 6 figures with their blogs, most are lucky if they get $10 per month from AdSense. It is very difficult to get enough quality content up on your website to make a viable living from it - you need to create critical mass. I learned this two years ago when I made a dramatic change to my website - I was no longer going to be the main writer and I would recruit others to help provide content. Fast forward to today and I now have over 1,000 writers and 25,000 pages of content on my site. My editors review the articles and I am removed from the day-to-day process. My authors benefit from the increased exposure they get on my site and the opportunity to meet my small business readers. There is no way I could have written 25,000 articles myself and it is unlikely that you will generate enough content yourself to make a serious income from your website. Pick a niche that has not been overly exploited, make a great looking website, and recruit experts to write for you so you can build your content base.

The advice gave my Mastermind Group member a few things to think about and I hope has sparked a few thoughts in your mind as well.

Using the best type's of Keywords

The Germany company SISTRIX conducted a study of 10,000 random keywords and then performed an analysis of the top 100 Google results for each keyword. Now that is a lot of data crunching! They looked at what on site factors were most likely to generate top rankings in Google. The results were as follows:

  • Keywords in the title tag are important as well as in the body of the text but title tag keywords carry far more weight

  • Keywords in H2-H6 tags can influence your rankings while keywords in H1 tags do not appear to have an effect (a very different view from most SEO experts)

  • Keywords in bold or strong tags can positively impact your rankings

  • Keywords in image file names and image alt attributes also improved a site’s rankings

  • Keywords in the domain name often ranked higher

  • Keywords in the file path did not help the rankings of the sites that were analyzed (again, a different view from standard SEO thinking)

  • File size does not seem to have an impact on your rankings

  • The number of inbound links and PageRank value had a significant impact on rankings (not surprising). They found that the number one result had 4 times as many inbound links as the number 11 result (on to the 2nd page of Google results)
