Welcome to our page. We are six couples who enjoy each others' company, and have for several years. A few years ago, we decided to start going out to dinner the 2nd Saturday of the each month to ensure getting together regularly; whoever can make it that night knows to expect good company and hopefully good food!!! We all live in CT, with a majority of us located in New London County. We have been known to travel a bit to restaurants throughout CT and Rhode Island. We usually order 1-2 bottles of wine (depending on how many Table 7 people are present) chosen by one of our members who owns a package store, appetizers, salads, entrees, and dessert. This page will serve as memories for us...and recommendations/suggestions for you. So...bon appetit...and l'chaim!

  • Wine List: Adequate wine list with upper end prices. We ordered Frei Brothers Pinot Noir ($34), which was very good.
  • Appetizers: Specials-Chicken Provencal Soup, $4.95, nice crisp vegetables and lots of chicken chunks; Lobster Corn Chowder, $6.95, very good with lots of corn and a fair amount of lobster.
  • Salads: Baked Goat Cheese Salad with field greens, tomatoes, and olives with red wine vinaigrette, $9.95, and Field Green Salad with apples, mandarin oranges, craisins, and candied pecans with balsamic dressing, $7.95, were huge, big enough for 2, and quite tasty.

Entrees : From the menu-Veal Francaise with spinach, roasted tomatoes risotto and white wine lemon garlic sauce, $18.95, quite tasty; Open Faced Ravioli with lobster shrimp, scallops and lobster chive sauce, $21.95, excellent, good sized portion (this from the big eater); Specials-Pumpkin Ravioli with grilled chicken (this was a substitution for the scallops), sun-dried tomatoes, cubes of butternut squash and apples, with a brown sugar sauce, $22.95, quite yummy and filling; Salmon with Blueberry BBQ Glaze, spaghetti squash, avocado-almond chutney, $22.95, just excellent; Halibut Wrapped in Apple Bacon on white truffle, red onion, goat cheese potato tower with a sauce “with a kick,” $25.95, excellent.

Dessert : (made in-house)-Specials-Blueberry Macadamia Bread Pudding with white chocolate ice cream, $7.95, rich, but not heavy, big enough to share, Chocolate Molten Lava Cake, $7.95, superb; From the menu-Banana Splits with 3 scoops of ice cream (substituted with malted milk and white chocolate for the strawberry and chocolate), $6.95, what could be bad? Banana Chocolate Raviolis with malted milk ice-cream, $7.95, excellent, but the only chocolate was the drizzle on the plate. No one ordered coffee or tea.

COMMENTS: Olio’s is a busy place on a Saturday night! We got one of the last parking spots in the parking lot (which could be better lit, especially in the unpaved section, and maybe larger.) We were seated right away for our 7:00 PM reservation. The couple ahead of us did not have a reservation and were told it would be at least a 45 minute wait. We immediately got two baskets of hot, delicious bread with three bowls of garlic lovers dipping oil. Butter was brought on request. Our waitress was very attentive, good natured, and knowledgeable about the menu and specials. She let us know before we ordered what the kitchen was running low on. There were many specials offered in every category. The specials seem to be a notch above the regular menu items in regards to creativity with ingredients and flavors. The kitchen is very accommodating with substitutions-the waitress did not have to check first with the chef. Water glasses were refilled frequently and more bread was brought promptly on request. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their selections; portions were good sized and the quality and freshness of the ingredients is superb. Be forewarned, though, Olio’s is very noisy and very dimly lit (especially for middle-aged eyes reading menus.) The chairs got to be a little uncomfortable towards the end of the meal. This was not our first visit to Olio’s and once again it did not disappoint. We would all return again – a very enjoyable evening!

Wine List: The list was average (5 out of 10); the prices on the high side (7 of 10) (The wine glasses looked almost dirty, though there were no lip stains or anything on them.)
  • Appetizers: New England Clam Chowder- very nice, creamy, generous with the clams, right amount of potatoes; Baked Stuffed Portobello breaded and stuffed with sweet Italian sausage and feta cheese, topped with sauteed spinach and balsamic reduction (very good but not that warm)
  • Salad: crisp romaine with a few homemade croutons, a couple small slices of tomato, peppers and cucumbers; Dressings--1000 Island, Blue Cheese (w/chunks of cheese), Ranch, Creamy Garlic--all served on the side of the salad bowl. (Included with entrees)
  • Entrees: Prime Rib-14 oz with bone, slices of zucchini and chunks of roasted potatoes $21; Veal Picatina -two pieces of veal with artichoke, mushrooms, peppers in lemon-wine sauce, served over penne $28 (felt it was overpriced for only 2 pieces of veal as same dish with chicken is $14--this was an evening special); Seafood Fra Diavlo- Scallops, shrimp and mussels in spicy marinara broth over linguini- $24; Mandarin Sea Bass: Breaded with panko bread crumbs. and sauteed in sesame oil over rice , sweet/spicy citrus sauce $24 (comment was the outside was hard as if it had been deep fried too long) Chateabriand for two: four slices of filet of beef, with 6 small slices of zucchini and a few chunks of roasted potato -$52 with two glasses of wine (could have included more potatoes and veggies)

Dessert- made on the premises -Blueberry Cheesecake-light and creamy, topped with fresh blueberries; Carrot Cake: very fresh with lots of raisins and nuts, good cream cheese frosting; Caramel Brownie served warm and very chocolately, cut into 6 pcs so we each could try it!; (Seems another party had reserved the remaining pieces before dinner, so remember to check out desserts in showcase when first ordering!) prices ranged $6-7; coffee was very strong and labeled as not very good, while tea is available flavored, but not in a chest to be brought to the table--water was very hot, however!

COMMENTS Overall, a good meal, would probably go back again. Parking is a problem, small parking lot/on the street parking. Nice ambiance, but very noisy as more people were seated in the dining room (also have a separate room with the bar and more tables). Had to ask for more bread--warm rolls(6) served with packs of butter. Presentation of food was very attractive. The wait staff was pleasant but was young; needs a little more polish (i.e. poured the wine without having it tasted and approved). Had to ask for water refills several times, though was attentive most of the time. Our waiter told us that they were known for their steaks and ribs. Dress is very casual, even Saturday night. They also serve breakfast and lunch.
