What is PPC?

PPC Advertising, also known as pay-per-click or sponsored search, is a form of search engine marketing that allows advertisers to pay for ad space on search engines such as Google or Yahoo. The process is based on keywords, what internet users enter into the search engines, setting a cost-per-click (CPC) bid and writing ads relevant to your keywords. Once a search is initiated in an engine such as Google, the keywords you have bid on will be matched with the search query and your ad will be displayed above or to the side of the natural/organic results.

A Brief History of PPC

The pay-per-click industry came into existence in 1998 as GoTo.com. Initially developed by Bill Gross as a method for monetizing algorithm-based (organic) search engines, GoTo quickly grew. The process was simple: advertisers could pay for specific keywords, GoTo would ensure relevancy through human editing, and users of the search engine clicked through on the targeted ads. Eventually, GoTo.com became Overture which then was purchased by Yahoo! in 2003. Google launched their successful AdWords PPC program in 2000 and quickly became the behemoth we all know and love today. Other notable PPC search engines include Miva, LookSmart, Ask.com and MSN/Live (adCenter).
